Governor Wavinya Ndeti has announced a comprehensive relief and recovery package for traders affected by the devastating fire that razed the Machakos Mitumba Market on Saturday night, destroying property worth millions of shillings.

The blaze, which left 226 traders counting significant losses, destroyed businesses and merchandise, disrupting the livelihoods of hundreds of families that depend on the market for their income.

In response to the disaster, Governor Ndeti unveiled a three-pronged intervention aimed at supporting the affected traders and facilitating the restoration of business operations.

As part of the relief measures, the Governor has made a personal donation of KSh 1 million to assist the victims during the recovery period.

The County Government, through the Department of Emergency and Response, has also committed to reconstructing the market to provide traders with a safe and conducive environment to resume their businesses.

In addition, each of the 226 affected traders will receive a KSh 50,000 grant as startup capital to enable them to restock their businesses and rebuild their livelihoods.

"I visited the Machakos Mitumba Market following the devastating fire that destroyed businesses and merchandise, leaving over 200 traders counting heavy losses.

My heartfelt sympathies go to all those affected. To support their recovery, I have made a personal contribution of KSh 1 million. In addition, my administration will restock every shop destroyed in the fire with merchandise worth KSh 50,000 to help traders get back on their feet.

I also urge the relevant security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the cause of the fire and ensure measures are put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future...I stand in solidarity with all the affected traders and their families during this difficult time. I commend the Machakos County Fire and Rescue Team for their swift response in containing the blaze.

The announcement has been welcomed as a significant boost for traders who lost their only source of income in the fire. County officials have affirmed that the government will continue working closely with the affected traders throughout the recovery and reconstruction process.
