IEBC Addresses Circulating Video Alleging Illegal Voter Registration and Transfer at Kenyatta University

Following a viral video on social media alleging illegal voter registration and transfer at Kenyatta University, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) issued a press release on 10th September addressing the incident.

The electoral body acknowledged that it was aware of the video circulating on social media regarding voter registration at Kenyatta University.

The commission clarified that there is ongoing registration of voters across all constituencies, Huduma Centres, and the Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.

As for the Kenyatta University incident, the electoral body said that the commission also deploys voter registration kits to strategic places when necessary to reach out to and register all eligible Kenyans.

“Where necessary and based on operational considerations, the Commission deploys voter registration kits to strategic locations to reach out and register eligible Kenyan citizens, as happened at Kenyatta University.”

The Commission insisted that it is a constitutional right for Kenyans to register as voters at any polling station.

The video circulating on social media alleges that voters were being transferred and registered to vote in Wajir County. Those allegedly spearheading the registration were confronted by members of the public, and when asked who had ordered them to conduct the exercise, they allegedly said they had been ordered by one of the MPs from Wajir County.

IEBC has said that it is collaborating with relevant government agencies to take action and possibly make arrests in accordance with the law.

“The Commission has taken the allegations in the clip with the seriousness it deserves, and it is currently working with relevant government agencies to take appropriate action in accordance with the law, including making arrests where there is culpability.”

The commission also clarified its role, saying that it facilitates the registration of eligible Kenyans as voters and does not influence voters to choose a particular polling station.

The commission pleaded with Kenyans not to interfere with its processes as it continues to discharge its mandate.

“The Commission urges members of the public to refrain from interfering with the Commission's processes as it endeavours to discharge its mandate.”

The Commission also urged Kenyans to rely only on information from official sources and exercise caution against misinformation that could lead to insecurity among Kenyans.
