President Ruto Says Government Committed to Creating Employment for Young People

President William Ruto has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to creating employment opportunities for young people across the country.

According to a statement released on his social media accounts, the president said the government has established a range of transformative programmes aimed at generating jobs and supporting the country’s economic transformation.

He maintained that young people remain at the centre of the government’s development agenda.

“We have established a range of transformative programmes to create employment opportunities for our young people across the country, ensuring that they are at the centre of our nation’s economic transformation,” reads part of the President’s statement.

Among the programmes highlighted by the President is the Affordable Housing Programme, his administration’s flagship development initiative. The programme aims to provide decent and affordable housing while creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth.

In Nairobi County alone, President Ruto said 36 Affordable Housing Programme projects are currently underway. The projects are expected to deliver more than 180,000 housing units while creating tens of thousands of jobs. They are also expected to stimulate economic activities across the capital city.

The head of state added that the government will continue investing in programmes that equip young people with the skills, opportunities, and resources they need to secure meaningful employment and build sustainable livelihoods.

To strengthen the informal sector, the President announced that the government will allocate KSh80 million to support artisans and mechanics in Nairobi County. The funds will be used to acquire modern equipment and tools, to improve productivity and to help them expand their businesses.

The statement further noted that more than 40,000 Kenyans have already registered under the Recognition of Prior Learning Programme, which seeks to assess, certify, and formally recognise the skills of artisans in various trades.

“At the same time, more than 40,000 Kenyans have already registered under the Recognition of Prior Learning programme, which will train and issue certificates to artisans of various crafts,” reads the statement.

The president encouraged more skilled workers to enrol in the programme so that their experience and expertise can be formally recognised, opening up greater economic opportunities.

In addition, the government is constructing modern workshops for artisans and mechanics across Nairobi to provide safer and more dignified working spaces. According to the statement, the facilities will also support the licensing and formalisation of informal businesses.

The president made the remarks after hosting more than 5,000 artisans and mechanics at State House, Nairobi, where he outlined the government’s efforts to support the informal sector through skills development, improved working conditions, and increased access to modern tools and equipment.
