NPS Denies Links to Abductions as Enforced Disappearances Row Deepens
The National Police Service (NPS) has denied the recent allegations associating Police officers to abductions and enforced disappearances. The NPS Spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, in a statement issued on Friday, 3rd July, described the claims as False, Misleading, and lacking credibility.
“The National Police Service has taken note of the persistent circulation of allegations linking its officers to abductions. The Service categorically rejects these claims. They are false, misleading, and unsupported by any credible evidence,” Nyaga stated.
The Police Service further stated that all arrests made by its officers are guided by the Law and that there are no persons among either the reported or alleged to have been abducted who are held in any Police Station.
NPS added that all arrests made are recorded in the Occurrence Book(OB), processed through Legal processes, and that all suspects are always brought before the Court as provided in the Constitution.
“The National Police Service is not involved in any abductions, and no police station is currently holding any person reported or alleged to have been abducted,” Nyaga added.
NPS confirmed that all cases and reports of missing persons or suspected abduction are being investigated professionally and pointed out that some concluded investigations reveal that certain alleged disappearances were stage-managed.
“Every report of a missing person or alleged abduction is investigated. In some instances, investigations have established that disappearances were staged with the intent to mislead the public or undermine confidence in the Service,” he explained.
Nyaga called upon the Public to help in the investigation process by providing any substantial information concerning a missing person or alleged abduction to the nearest Police station. In the statement, the Media and Civil society organizations were also called out and urged to adhere to professionalism by verifying information before sharing it.
Recently, the Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo also dismissed abduction claims linked to the June 25 Gen Z anniversary Demos.
Independent Policing Oversight Authority(IPOA) has also pointed out they are conducting investigations of alleged abductions, unlawful detentions, and excessive use of force during protests, citing cases where police officers used unidentified Vehicles with some officers wearing plain clothes, making it hard for protesters to differentiate between Goons and Security personnel.
